Alan,
Thanks for the info, I've just returned from another backpack and written it up, I'm now catching up on the blogs.
I'm not sure I've heard of the OPSI, but if anyone can officially stir it up it must be your good self - I look forward to developments!. I noticed a referral to our site from the OPSI in our server logs, someone is reading it.

Talking of mapping, I am currently having my little campaign to publish my Anquet maps on my blog taken up by the Office for Public Sector Information (OPSI) - you can read more about it over at my blog

Alan,
After reading that I feel quite restrained!. The procedures really are convoluted and have alienated quite a few people, I've been in computing for over 30 years and it's hard to follow what the installation software is doing or why at times (I won't bore you with details!). The complexity is all about maintaining total control of your map installation in the (incorrect) belief that such a system offers better security for their map data. Keep it simple!.

Gary,
The old installation was V6, I know basically what the login problem was.
Whatever they do to their site or servers, I don't like the idea of their software passing extensive details of my system to their mapserver, and normally I only allow it for technical interest and testing. However it is necessary to obtain Harvey mapping, which is only available by download, not on CD.

Edit: by the way, Anquet will output GPX format now, and it's actually compatible with Memory Map.

Hi Geoff - sounds like been having fun. I've used Anquet mapping for a number of years now and never really had any problems in setting it up, the only gripe I've got with it is that I can't create a .gpx file of my routes. It sounded like that your problems with setting up could have been that your old Anquet mapping could have been their version 1 software? Which was totally different programme to their latest stuff, not sure why they didn't just upgrade the software rather than writing new stuff? I understand now that they.ve been trying to totally restructure their web site/servers to try and solve some of the problems, not sure what success they are having.
As for mobile devices I've got s Mio handheld PC which I run Pocket Anquet on, its really good, and reasonablly accurate, only down side is that its an internal battery and the life not brilliant. The new version has replaceable batteries now!
Enjoy your trip Gary

Well, that certainly made me chuckle!

I too had old Anquet product on my machine (transferred over from my old pc) when I bought the complete set of GB in the new format to replace it to plan my LEJOG.

Now I am as untechnical as a man can possibly get, so it hacked me right off that there were no visible signs of instructons that a non-techie chap could understand.

After days and days of grief I tracked the barstewards down to a phone number of their actual office and threatened to visit them with my computer and throw it through their windows, I was so brassed off!

However I was even more brassed off by their total disregard of their customers. They HONESTLY believed that it was okay to chuck a very 'techie' email at me two days after I had made an online query for help. This went on endlessly, as their 'solutions' never ever worked!. I had bought and paid for their products that frankly would not work on my brand new quite high spec machine!

In the end, the only way they could stop me visiting them and causing merry hell at their offices was to get a bloke to talk me through the complete installation from scratch again, stripping out all the stuff they had 'helped' me with previously, saying something like "I don't know who told you to do that!" when it was themselves who had!!!

They deserve to go horribly bust.

I did try a few months back to download the free imaging stuff but was so gobsmacked at the difficulty of doing it that I gave up.

Anquet can rot in hell now I have finally got the thing working albeit at a very basic level.

I would Never Never Ever advise anyone to buy their products.

Phew - I feel better now.....
