Explorer Grid Map

Explorer Grid sampleHere is an item which might be of interest to users of Memory Map (MM) mapping software, particularly those planning to walk a long distance route, although it is useful for shorter walks and for general reference.

After much effort with MM and Photoshop, I’ve produced a calibrated MM map showing the Explorer map numbers and boundaries as a grid overlaid on a 1:1,000,000 scale map of mainland UK. It enables you to see at a glance which Explorer maps cover a particular area, or which ones are needed for a long distance route:- you just plot the route then switch to this geo-referenced Explorer grid map and read them off.

If anyone wants this map file, email me via the Contact page of the main website for the URL to download it (8Mb file).

For technical interest, half the time I spent on this map was wasted (well not exactly wasted: it failed to work properly but I did learn a lot). It seemed to work at first, but after importing some routes they were positioned very significantly in error despite the calibration points showing the correct coordinates. The problem boiled down to the fact that both the checkboxes in the Calibration dialog need to be ticked: UTM and Lat/Lon Grid. Without this simple piece of information (which is not mentioned in the Help file) the map projection is not applied and the boundaries are distorted.

    Brian,
    Email sent.
I assume you have a trial version of MM then, this Explorer Grid should work ok in that.

I spend a great deal of screentime with MM perusing maps: scrolling them around, zooming them in and out and looking at the detail, and working out routes. It’s worth its weight in gold just for that, and I don’t even use the GPS facilities (not having one). For backpacking I can print out map sheets and save a lot of weight and bulk, especially on long routes.

    Thanks Geoff, got it.

Yes, I have the trial version. It looks like a time saver for me, so far I’ve used it for the same reasons that you do…I also don’t have GPS as I like to sharpen my skill with the old compass. So far MM has saved me about 4 hours in time, which I can certaintly put to good use elsewhere! Thanks Geoff…happy journeys!

    HI Geoff,
You’ve helped me in the past with MM and I’d be grateful to receive a copy of your explorer grid mapr grid map….I’m currently using something by MM themselves and it lacks base points so you can see which maps you need to take with you.
    Thanks
